Fly fishing for beginners

September 7th, 2010

I’ll jump right in. I’ve got down how to cast well and I practiced on fish-less streams and ponds. I want to try going for crappie in my local pond. There a re a lot of crappie and I have caught them with lures and worms many times. What insect or fly should i use is my only question and any tips for casting. If you could be descriptive this would sure help.

The correct fly line for my rod

September 6th, 2010

Good evening all – I just finished building my first fly rod (5wt) this holiday weekend and purchased  a reel off ebay. Now all I need to do is pick the correct fly-line. Any good, fairly decently priced fly line out there (internet) that you use or recommend? Now the real question is how often do I change the line? Is it necessary to use a backing? A leader? Thanks in advance and would appreciate any other relevant information about fly fishing line.

Thanks, Corey

Downstream White River Fly Fishing

September 5th, 2010

I have started to fish the White River in a great hard to find location, there is a heavy canopy over the river with a nice stream feeding into it and the sides and covered with reeds and bushes. This prevents me from side-arm casting from the side of the stream or casting from in the water. Should I just let a fly float down the river downstream of where Im standing? If so, should a float and dry fly or a wet fly?

Thanks, -Bill

Bass fishing and the different colors

September 4th, 2010
Hello Arkansas trout fisherman and women! I see this blog is primarily for trout anglers, but come on, there has to be some largemouth bass anglers in this group. ;-) My question, I am ready to fill up my tackle-box and buy plastic baits for bass fishing I just need to know how do the color works is it the darker the lighter the color or is it the lighter the color and also when do you use rattle traps spinner baits and buzz baits etc.
If anyone wants to point me in a direction or cast some advice it would be appreciated.

Cranks, spinners, buzzbaits, poppers, and top waters?

September 3rd, 2010
spinning-fishing-lures
I give up! I’ll be fishing for the next 4 days and the weather forecasts really choppy water due to the wind.  The last time I was on the lake  this happened and I used everything in my tackle arsenal. Crankbaits, spinners, buzzbaits, poppers, and top waters.  Nothing! Zero. The only thing that seemed to work to the slightest amount was a swim-baits. Any advice for choppy water lake fishing?

Diamond Park Arkansas anyone?

September 2nd, 2010
I wanted to take my son (14 yr old) on a well over due Arkansas vacation. I am leaning toward going to the Diamond Park because I here it’s a great place for young man  since it will be just be me and him. Any thoughts?..anyone of you folks been there or recommend anything or is it just a tourist trap? I says you look for the diamonds in a field that the plow every so often. We live in Memphis, so I don’t think it’s too far of a drive. And it will have to be a cheap vacation boot! Any advice or help sure would be appreciated.

Arkansas redneck fishing joke

September 1st, 2010
A redneck was stopped by a game warden in Arkansas recently with two ice chests of fish. He was leaving a cove well known for its fishing.

The game warden asked the man, “Do you have a license to catch those fish?”

“Naw, sir, I ain’t got none of them there licenses, no. You must understand these here are my pet fish.”

“Pet fish?” said the game warden.

“Yeah . Every night I take these here fish down to da lake and let them swim ’round for a while. Then I whistle and they jump rat back into this here ice chest and I take them home.”

“That’s a bunch of hooey! Fish can’t do that!” says the warden.

The redneck looked at the game warden for a moment and then said, “It’s the truth Mr. Government man, I’ll show you. It really works.”

“Okay,” said the game warden, “I’ve GOT to see this!”

The redneck poured the fish into the lake and stood and waited.

After several minutes, the game warden turned to him and said, “Well?”

“Well, what?” said the redneck.

The warden said, “When are you going to call them back?”

The redneck said, “Call who back?”

“The FISH!” replied the warden.

“What fish?” answered the redneck.

(We in Arkansas may not be as smart as some city slickers, but we aren’t as dumb as some government employees.)
