I understand there is really no such thing as a fail safe fishing knot. I use the Pitzen fisherman’s knot, I use it for all my trout fishing and even for big king salmon, so the line I use is 30 pound test.I do mine a little different since it is thicker line, I use the five or six wraps, instead of the three wraps they suggest for trout fishing. When I use this knot, I make sure I do it just right because I know most fish lost is due to cinching down the knots too fast, and weak terminal gear. And people I know ask what pound test you using? I tell them 30 pound test monofilament, and they say what!,I use 50-60 lbs test and lose my fish.I use a good quality monofilament, good quality swivels and good quality hooks, and I am a firm believer in knots are the main thing to really watch how it is done, because monofilament heats up if the knot is cinched down fast and can result in a weak knot, I also lubricate the line before I cinch it down. I do the same for other salmon, but use a good quality 17-20lb test line, and get some nice big silver salmon, trout, and red salmon. I say good quality instead of saying top quality, because everyone has their own choice for what they call top quality. My opinion, it is top quality what I use,but people will always say I got better. I do use other knots improved clinch, uni, palomar, trilene knot, but the one I use for fishing trout is the Pitzen knot or a few variations of it. I tie mine a bit different, at the end before you cinch it down then draw it tight. I put the end of the line going through the the loop the same way the the main line goes through the loop, instead of going the opposite way like the original shows. I have tried both for strength and found the original will break easier than the way I do it. I should have put this in my illustration above when I first thought about putting this in here. Maybe I have made an improved version of the Pitzen knot, I don’t know, but it works for me. And Josh 2.0 the tie knot it is called the double improved knot or also known as the Rivers inlet knot. Any suggestions? As you see I am very much into knots… or trying to find a good one to improve my overall fishing experience.
Thanks for the invite-Terry

I’ve been tying to get into fly fishing and understanding the different types of flies for a while now, and this would be the perfect oppurtunity. Could any angler want to help me out with these?- Andy

Is it possible to drift fish with a spinning reel on the White River? A few anglers I met were talking about drift fishing and I got the idea that it’s basically replicating fly fishing but with a spinning reel? They told me they were using glowballs or something, these cotton ball looking things. Does anyone know what they are, how they used, or rigged? Any weights? I’d be fishing for trout or even possibly catfish. They also used the phrase ‘bouncing roe’ (off the bottom) If you have experience drift fishing for blue cats then i’d sure like to hear about how to do that too.

I was given a fly rod which sat unused in my garage for many years . The reel just “free spins” and there doesn’t appear to be any drag action at all- Is it broken, or do I just need to adjust it somehow? I’d really like to use this tackle to fish with, but just don’t know if it is usable. Any help is greatly appreciated!
This reel has no markings, but is attached to a 8′ or 8.5′ 7 weight rod-

Hello I am angler in Mountain Home Arkansas and I am mainly a bait fisherman and had a co-worker show me how to fly fish on our breaks to try and catch a bigger fish. I got hooked and wanted to learn more about fly fishing and been reading up on casting techniques, but should have read about is all the different wet and dry flies themselves. Unfortunately, my co-worker moved to another store so it’s not possible to pick his brain. Anyway, I am a bit lost and my interest in it diminished for a time. Now recently I was looking through a estate sale garage/sale and I saw one of his old rod and reel that was for a ridiculously cheap price. So I am wanting to continue where I left off and I want to try some fly fishing next time I go down by the stream or lake. Now the problem is I have no Flies and wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what kind of flies I should use up here in North Arkansas, say on a pond for bass and crappie to learn on? Also I realize the type of fly depends on whats native here but im more hoping someone can help me rule out some types that would never be used here in the North. Thanks!
Mike
P.S. Thank You for the invite.
