Weekend of lake trout fishing

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Thought I’d post on this blog because from time to time I get to Arkansas to do a little trout fishing. I figured I’d share my last two weekends of lake trout fishing.

last Saturday I fished it for the first time two weekends ago and again had some great lake trout fishing as well as Pike. Pretty much stuck with two flies that I slow trolled off the edges of weed beds and reefs; deer hair gomphus bugs and bottom walkers. The lake trout were not big with the biggest being around 19″s. They do get a lot bigger in this lake.

They do give you a heck of a fight in the cold water and they love to do their alligator rolls.
Lot’s of wildlife abundant in the area with elk everywhere

Saw my first Marmot.

And got a chuckle from these little fox pups we stumbled upon.

All in all a great fly fishing trip and memories for a life time.

Fathers Day trout fishing weekend

Sunday, June 20th, 2010
Fathers Day trout fishing weekend and headed out and started with a pheasant tail – GRHE SH dropper with plenty of shot to get it down, but didn’t do anything for a while even though I fished every piece of water thoroughly. I did this because I couldn’t really tell where the runs were, just the general area. Wading was kind of like that TV show where contestants run an obstacle course and get hammered by foam pylons – you can see it coming, you know what you have to do, then you get slammed anyway, fall in the water and some kid in a inner tube says “…you ok, old man?”Tough trout fishing, no action, a nice layer of fog, time to change tactics. Swapped the SH for a bright pink SJ and caught a bow on my first cast, and then 2 more in short order.

Crappy picture of either a holdover or a stream born fish…..

Same general run, probably my 25th attempt, 5 or 6 to hand having a little fun with the stockers, when I lifted on one that didn’t budge. Two seconds later the fish figured out that the pink worm was biting back and he decided to head down river, up river, cross river, back to the run and just for fun – do it all over again. Considering the conditions and the fly, I would not have even hoped for this one……

Skinny, but solid 16-17″ brown trout that even though all fish are pretty, this guy was gorgeous. To top it off, you can see a healed gash in his back, probably from the heron two years ago.

The biggest thing I learned, or maybe re-learned, yesterday was that low and clear doesn’t always mean great fishing, high and stained means the fish are moving (and apparently hungry). Old browns will eat pink worms if given a chance. If you slip and splash, try to do it when there isn’t anyone around.

Great day, hope you got out. Happy Fathers Day!

Henry’s fork trout fishing

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010
I decided to hit the Henry’s fork to do some trout fishing and thought I’d share some fishing pictures.

All I fished were streamers. I would have caught more fish had I been fishing with PMDs, but oh well. I am dedicating this year to improving my streamer fishing.

Another beautiful day fly fishing

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010
Another beautiful day fly fishing and what could possibly be better? The sun was shining, the fish were biting, and I was fishing with my Dad and brother I was using a weighted #14 Bird’s Nest nymph under a strike indicator to plumb the depths of the pockets. A few small rainbows mashed the nymph, and then a nice brown came to play.

A quick picture in the grass, and back into the water.

It too came to the net, but didn’t like posing for a glamor shot.

Back into the water it went to fight another day.

Ora Bridge trout fishing

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010
Last week a friend of mine drove by the Ora Bridge of the lower Henry’s Fork – which is closed until the Saturday before Memorial Day to protect critical Rainbow spawning habitat – when he observed a local Outfitter’s (Teton Valley Lodge) boat, guide and two clients fishing the closed water. He promptly took some photos and the rest is history. This topic is flying through several other forum sites. Many of the posts elsewhere miss the point of what happened, but the truth is these guys should know better. I don’t want to start a shouting match or promote bad behavior on the board. But, I would like to hear from you BB members your thoughts on what happened and hear if you’ve seen such behavior where you fish.

Here is the original post from my friend:

Taken today above Ora boat ramp. It is closed to fishing until the end of the month.
