Record setting Brown Trout

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010
The White River is south of me  and where I live (MO) and I’ve read and herd there is record setting Brown Trout there. So I am going to take a trip this fall and give it a go. Here’s my questions. What type of equipment do I need? Here is the rigs that I have.
1. Fly Rod – 8′6″ with 6wt. line. I caught tons of hatchery size Rainbows on this in both rivers and lakes.
2. Spinning Rod – 5′ UL with 4lb mono. Same as above, lots of hatchery size Rainbows.
3. Spinning Rod – 6′6″ M with 8lb mono for Bass fishing. Caught hundreds of 2 and 3 lbs. Bass on this rig.

Will any of these work on 20+ pound Brown Trout?  All the pictures and information I get are about the fish and not what they were caught on. The locals claim that to catch the big Brown’s you need to night fish using scuds or midges close to the surface. During the day to jig the deep water.

Rod and reel ONLY for trout and catfish?

Friday, September 24th, 2010

I like to cook and bake rather then hunt, but here lately I have wanted to start to learn how to fish. As mentioned I am not into hunting unlike the rest of my family and why I want to ask a question here without having to go ask my family, because all I will get is a million opinions that will turn into some sort of argument.

Is it possible to buy a rod and reel ONLY for trout and catfish? Are these two species so different that you’d need to have a different fishing gear setup or is possible to merge the two?

My gear questions?

An affordable rod and reel for trout and catfish shore fishing a lake and the white river?
The basics for bait and or lures?
What time of day is best to fish?
How do I skin and gut the fish?

I appreciate your willingness and advice because I want to surprise them with the advice or education I learn by myself.
Regards,
Karen

Trout angler on Beaver lake

Sunday, September 19th, 2010
Over the weekend my family and I took out the  pontoon boat for a nice trip to the Beaver lake. We bought a Fishing license, and than hauled out the old fishing rods and reels, but by the time we got to the lake we were totally clueless about fishing. The lake we are fishing at has some nice Trout and lot’s and lot’s of stripers.  My question: Could we just use normal trout bait that they sell at any Sporting Goods store? Could someone here point me to a website or show me how I should set up my reel and the proper way to tie a  Next time I’ll be going it alone (tomorrow) depending on whether.
Appreciated it,
Mark

Golfer turns Trout Fisherman

Thursday, September 16th, 2010
I will always chase a white ball around a course, but I decided to hang up golf for a bit and switch to fishing. Trust me, it’s cheaper, more relaxing, zero stress, and wastes more time, lol. I moved to Arkansas from Washington because this State and people are wonderful and a great place to retire. What I was completely ignorant about was the World Class trout fishing here.  I’m looking to find out some info on trout fishing. I’ve been reading tons of things online. Alright my question: Getting night crawlers for bait, on 6lb test line, buying a $30.00 pole, and putting some split shots on it. Is that enough to catch me some trout? or do I need some power bait, a bobber, and an overall understanding of where the trout will be (behind some rocks, to not right the current), etc.

Any other ides to give to a newbie trout angler?

Thanks.

Fly Fishing From shore in a lake for trout?

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010
Hey everyone,
I’ve been enjoying the summers in Arkansas great outdoors and thought I’d post a question for my fellow razorbacks. I will be staying at a cabin on Beaverlake  for a couple of weeks in September and have not fished it before so I could use some advise. I’ll be using a 5w fly rod with floating line but need a bit of guidance for the best way to catch a lake trout. I have chest waders so I can wade, but what would be extremely helpful is to know what type of structures to keep an eye out for? Also, what flies I should be using in September to try and catch some of the trout. I will also be fishing below the dam if that helps with ancillary advice or flies.

Going for trout on the White River

Monday, August 16th, 2010
Hello all, and nice to see an Arkansas blog! My family I are heading to the White River in mid September to do some camping and trout fishing. I am gearing up and needed know what size line would be needed and definitely need a good technique for that time of year? We will not be fly fishing and know that trout spook easily there. I was/ am thinking possibly a 4lb test is best but I am open for suggestions? Could any fellow Arkansans want to tip another angler on what to use and not?
We will not be hiring a guide
