The Pike just won’t bite

Saturday, May 8th, 2010
Hello everyone, I am upset because for a over a week I’ve been targeting pike in a small 2.5 acre pond/lake that is absolutely “infested”(this seems to be the right term) with pike. There can be several pike in all different sizes seen during every outing. In 8 days of trying all sizes, types, colors, shapes of flies and trying different types of retrieve there was not a single hook-up.
Be it top water presentation, deep sinking line use or an intermediate going through different depths, nothing.
I tried, early mornings, during the day, late evenings. Picked sunny days, overcast days even fished through a storm. It just happened that even the water clarity has changed for some reason. First few days of fishing the water had some green and yellow “cloudy” stuff in it reducing the visibility to about 2-3 ft at the most. Last few days, after several rain storms, the water has cleared up significantly to a point where I can see several feet through very clear water. (Now I can see how and where I lost my flies :-)

All I got was rather two large pike following my fly all the way to the shore (about 3-6 ft from the shore), that was on two different occasions. First in the middle of a sunny day and the second right before the above mentioned storm.  Oh, and I did get one violent bite which, for some reason, did not result in a hook-up, might have been my “overdone” weed guard. Now, I am even considering to try soaking my flies in some type of fishing lure for the lack of other ideas. That’s how bad this is bugging me.

Given I am a newbie to chasing pike I ask for your opinions.

The pike in that lake are actively feeding as I can see numerous bait fish “explosions” quite often, but evenings seem to be the most active time. A couple of times, being in the right place, at the right time, I somehow managed to pick-up my line pretty fast and hit the “bait boiling” water right on and ………….. NOTHING.

I can’t wait to hear from all the experience pike pro’s here.

Thanks in advance
