Rig for fishing black drum?

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Hey all, I am your typical largemouth bass and trout anglers and never fly fished in my life, but I want to widen my variety and want to get after  some blackdrums and I was wondering what sort of rod/reel combo I should go with. The area I fish does not have a lot of space to move, so it’s going to be more a tug of war type fishing, so I’d rather focus on gear strength to land them rather then a fancy rod/reel combo to fight the fish.

Thanks,
Bill

Bass fishing and the different colors

Saturday, September 4th, 2010
Hello Arkansas trout fisherman and women! I see this blog is primarily for trout anglers, but come on, there has to be some largemouth bass anglers in this group. ;-) My question, I am ready to fill up my tackle-box and buy plastic baits for bass fishing I just need to know how do the color works is it the darker the lighter the color or is it the lighter the color and also when do you use rattle traps spinner baits and buzz baits etc.
If anyone wants to point me in a direction or cast some advice it would be appreciated.

The bass just won’t bite

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010
Hey all nice to see an ALL Arkansas blog! (Go Hogs) I also live in Arkansas, and not so much a trout anglers, but a bass fisherman. Alright I have a 15  acre pond this is 50% shallow, ranging from 2-3 ft deep, and the other end  is 12-15 ft. deep . Ive caught many of largemouth bass ranging from 6- 8lbs (catch and release) out of this pond every year. Oddly I don’t know whats been going on this summer because I will not get a bite for weeks, and then all of a sudden I will get four or five bites then a a 5 pound bass ? The bass will not bite and then all of a sudden hit like there is no tomorrow? Confusing and odd if you ask me. Suggestions or advice?

Ready to start fly fishing for trout

fly fishing
First, I want to say thank you for the invitation to this blog. Alright, my question is for the last 20 years I have been a longtime largemouth bass angler. Now, I want to start fresh and new fly fishing for trout. My casting is okay at best, but it seems that is one thing that will always need improvement. Also, looking for advice, tips, or books/vids, what flies to use when, ect. I live in in NW Arkansas and have close access to great fishing on the White River. So any tips for a fly fishing beginner would be a plus, and let me know if you want to go fishing!

fly fishing rod gift advice

Fly rod gift
My husband and I are  avid anglers here in Arkansas, but really only familiar with spinning rods. We manly fish for largemouth bass, smllies, and pike. Anyway, we just bought a place on the White River and now we want to learn how to fly fish. Any suggestions for two people just starting out? I don’t want to invest a fortune in fly fishing equipment (it’s my husbands birthday) because we still want to fish the lakes a lot too.
Thanks, Ann

New favorite fly fishing pond

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

A nice largemouth bass was a surprise- he was working the edge of a spawn bed, interesting. Had to break-in a new rod/sticks (Greys 3/4 8 footers). Great night, this pond is a few minutes from my house. They were ripping up the surface, sadly I had nothing close to what was blooming. Had a blast none the less and pumkinseeds- quite a few tonight, mostly small, the bruisers I saw, well, by the time I saw them, they spooked of course.

Fly fishing a 6.5lb largemouth bass

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010
Fly fishing a 6.5lb largemouth bass over the weekend and landed this nice 22″ 6.5 lb largemouth bass on Sunday.I thought I would share the pictures. The fun part was I had to palm the spool to slow this hog down. Drag is boring…
