Custom fly rod project

Saturday, June 12th, 2010
Hello everyone! Thought i’s post some pictures of my Custom fly rod project. This is a 4 pc 4wt built on the Cabelas PT+ blank which has a nice moderate action for those of you that like lazy casting strokes such as myself. The handle is my first attempt at using birch bark. Lots of work but I do enjoy the finished product. I think I will use birch bark again soon. The handle consists of Stabilized maple burl at the ends, blank walnut trim pieces, two pieces of brown burl cork and birch bark in the center. The reel seat is a Lemke which I turned a stabilized maple burl insert for. The guides are H&H. I typically put either a decorative wrap or a feather inlay on my rods, but I wanted the handle to be the center of attention on this one. I also put a hook keeper on this which is uncommon for me. But since I plan on using this for very small dry flies I thought it would be easier than hooking it to the stripping guide which is quite heavy wire.
Your honest opinions are much appreciated, and I gladly accept constructive criticism :-)

Thanks for looking.

Breaking in my new fly rod

Monday, May 31st, 2010
Breaking in my new fly rod in KC yesterday and got a new rod at  Cabelas. A TQR 5-foot 2-weight. I hurried home and went out to the lake after the storm passed to see how this new little toy felt with a fish on the end of it. This was the first nice bluegill on the rod. All I could do was stand there and laugh as the rod doubled over and he ran straight for the weeds! What a fun rod!

Since today was a holiday, I got up and headed back out to the lake first thing this morning. Most folks camping hadn’t gotten around yet, so very few people were on the water. I ended up bringing home 8 gills about the same size as the above pic, all on the 2-weight. Before the clouds cleared, purple was just killing ‘em, and then chartreuse was the ticket after the sun came out.

Leonard Grilse Fly fishing Rod

Friday, May 14th, 2010

I would also appreciate it if anyone has a catalog excerpt showing this rod. I’m looking for a suitable example of a circa early 20’s Leonard Grilse 12 1/2′ 3 piece fly rod to fill this bag and tip tube and it does not need to be in fish-able condition. Thanks much,  Please contact me:
