fly fishing line, and the newbie fly angler

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

As the title says I’m a newbie to fly fishing, but excited about giving it a go because it look like a lot of fun and and almost an art skill. I bought a second hand 8′6″ rod and reel,6/7, action. My plan is to fish in a small lake or a river with deep and shallow spots, I need a line and whatever else I might need, I’m thinking of a floating line with maybe a sinking tip,not sure,,mostly for trout, maybe use for small bass, bluegills because the weather is still a bit warm here for practice, probley a 5, weight forward?? floating or sinking? what line, leader, tippet? leader length? total beginner to fly fishing, not sure, what will I need?

Thanks-Roger

Stripers, trout, and Beaver Lake

Monday, October 4th, 2010
I live in Rogers, and the nearest trout stream is close to prairie creek. Now it is early fall and I am probably going fly fishing there, but I also want to get stripers that are stocked in in Beaver lake above which swim around the  lake dam. I want to order a trout patterned cl8 bait Cb 5, but my bass rod might be too small. It says it can throw baits up to 3/4 oz. but the Cb 5 is 9/10 oz.. Can it still throw it OK? I’m pretty new to swimbaits, and the only one I’ve ever used was a small bluegill ( which is why I don’t get the cb-9). I’m pretty sure I’ll be the first swimbait fisherman in the lake because we never use trout swimbaits. It should completely kill the stripers, but can my rod hold it? Also how does the cb-5 work, is it good?
My rod is medium action and 7′ long.
Thanks all,
Will

Flies for Fly Fishing advice

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010
Hello I am angler in Mountain Home Arkansas and I am mainly a bait fisherman and had a co-worker show me how to fly fish on our breaks to try and  catch a bigger fish. I got hooked and  wanted to learn more about fly fishing and been reading up on casting techniques, but should have read about is all the different wet and dry flies themselves. Unfortunately, my co-worker moved to another store so it’s not possible to pick his brain. Anyway, I am a bit  lost and my interest in it diminished for a time. Now recently I was looking through a estate sale garage/sale and I saw one of his old rod and reel that was for a ridiculously cheap price. So I am wanting to continue where I left off and I want to try some fly fishing next time I go down by the stream or lake. Now the problem is I have no Flies and wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what kind of flies I should use up here in North Arkansas,  say on a pond for bass and crappie to learn on?  Also I realize the type of fly depends on whats native here but im more hoping someone can help me rule out some types that would never be used here in the North. Thanks!
Mike
P.S. Thank You for the invite.

Downstream White River Fly Fishing

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

I have started to fish the White River in a great hard to find location, there is a heavy canopy over the river with a nice stream feeding into it and the sides and covered with reeds and bushes. This prevents me from side-arm casting from the side of the stream or casting from in the water. Should I just let a fly float down the river downstream of where Im standing? If so, should a float and dry fly or a wet fly?

Thanks, -Bill

Bass fishing on a fly rod?

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010
Bass fishing with Fly rod
Bass fishing on a fly rod? I understand a 6 wt. line would be best, but the type/brand best suited for smallmouth bass and bream fishing? I am also looking for some solid advice on how to rig up a fly rod. Finally, should I fish near the top of the water or go deeper? Because when you think of fly fishing, I always assume that keeping the lure or fly on the top. Also, a bit confusing for me to understand the difference between dry flies and wet, but then again I am a new fly fisherman. ;-)
Thanks for your help Arky Angler.

Online insect library for fly anglers?

Monday, August 30th, 2010

I was thinking about building a website or possibly finding an excising one that has a picture list (close representation) of the natural aquatic insect life of the river systems starting in my own  State. I understand this would be a huge job to input in all the the US river systems, but I was thinking the web site could be open source?

This could be a helpful tool to aid fly anglers? Or is there a website already online?

Imput is valued.

Kevin

Thank You in advance.
