Weekend of lake trout fishing
Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010Thought I’d post on this blog because from time to time I get to Arkansas to do a little trout fishing. I figured I’d share my last two weekends of lake trout fishing.

last Saturday I fished it for the first time two weekends ago and again had some great lake trout fishing as well as Pike. Pretty much stuck with two flies that I slow trolled off the edges of weed beds and reefs; deer hair gomphus bugs and bottom walkers. The lake trout were not big with the biggest being around 19″s. They do get a lot bigger in this lake.

They do give you a heck of a fight in the cold water and they love to do their alligator rolls.
Lot’s of wildlife abundant in the area with elk everywhere

Saw my first Marmot.

And got a chuckle from these little fox pups we stumbled upon.

All in all a great fly fishing trip and memories for a life time.

My Walleye on the Fly
Monday, June 21st, 2010
Caught another one a little smaller, then a smallish crappie:
I caught three walleye and three small crappie that were absolutely inhaling the big closer. Nice to get out for the afternoon, hopefully all the fathers out there had a good day as well.

Crappy picture of either a holdover or a stream born fish…..

Same general run, probably my 25th attempt, 5 or 6 to hand having a little fun with the stockers, when I lifted on one that didn’t budge. Two seconds later the fish figured out that the pink worm was biting back and he decided to head down river, up river, cross river, back to the run and just for fun – do it all over again. Considering the conditions and the fly, I would not have even hoped for this one……

Skinny, but solid 16-17″ brown trout that even though all fish are pretty, this guy was gorgeous. To top it off, you can see a healed gash in his back, probably from the heron two years ago.
The biggest thing I learned, or maybe re-learned, yesterday was that low and clear doesn’t always mean great fishing, high and stained means the fish are moving (and apparently hungry). Old browns will eat pink worms if given a chance. If you slip and splash, try to do it when there isn’t anyone around.
Great day, hope you got out. Happy Fathers Day!
