My Walleye on the Fly

Monday, June 21st, 2010
My Walleye on the Fly. I didn’t want to waste the beautiful weather so I drove up to a local spillway to do a little carp fishing. I only saw two, both out in the faster current which makes presenting a fly tough so I decided to see if I could find anything closer to the dam that was willing to eat. I looked through the boxes I had with me, tied on a size 2 chartreuse/white clouser and started casting. The spots I usually catch crappie at produced nothing so I moved a little closer to the dam. During my first retrieve in the new spot I thought I snagged up on a rock until the snag started shaking and I pulled in my first ever walleye on a fly. Nothing too big, but it was fun and it’s always nice to add another species to the catch list.
Caught another one a little smaller, then a smallish crappie:

I caught three walleye and three small crappie that were absolutely inhaling the big closer. Nice to get out for the afternoon, hopefully all the fathers out there had a good day as well.

Wild brook trout trip report

Sunday, June 20th, 2010
Wild brook trout trip report. I arrived at Mortimer late Wednesday and pitched the tent and settled in for the night. Thursday hit the upper DH section just down from Lost Cove. Lots of brook trout still in the stream like this guy. I didn’t see too many anglers releasing fish and there were lots of spinner baits being tossed into the stream.

Friday hiked into the upper Wilson Creek with my 3 WT. I had forgotten how slippery the rocks are and found myself more than once on my rear wet wadding, but it was a nice way to cool off on such a hot day.

Managed a few wild rainbows on a small copper john. I hooked one nice 14″ rainbow on an orange squirmy wormie  Had him almost to the net when I lost my footing on some rocks and jerked the 6X line breaking him off. The wild rainbows are beautiful.

Not a bad day despite my clumsiness-maybe cause I’m getting too old!
Did treat myself to a nice cold ice cream on the way back to Mortimer.

Just another sunny fishing day

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Just another sunny fishing day and went to a lake, one of the few not over-grassed yet. Caught a bunch in the lilypads on the way to some overhanging trees around the bend. The following, plus more, were congregated under the tree…..

So, I put the TXL  1wt. to work.

Fly fishing the western Sierras

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Fly fishing the western Sierras and despite high flows on the western sierra’s, had a most enjoyable day fishing with a buddy and not suck a bad place to spend a day…  Fished 4 creeks in a day, had great success at two. I was surprised by one of them… its not north surprisingly enough.

The trick for him was to let my stimulator get sucked under and pulled way back under the foam…then quick strips back.and that’s the great thing about stimulator, skate em on the surface, dead drift a float, dead drift em sunk, or let them sink and strip em in…

3″ AW Gamage Reel for sale

Friday, June 18th, 2010

3″ AW Gamage Reel for sale is a neat little 3” JW Young made AW Gamage. Reel retains a great deal of its original finish, albeit for a scuffmark on the back plate and some surface marks on the spool. The reel has been cleaned, lubed and the spring adjusted. The spindle to spool fitting is tight and the reel is in great condition. The foot is 2 3/8” long and will work in many cap and ring and most pocketed reel seats. Reel will balance a 7’ to 7’6” cane or fiberglass rod; will hold a 3dt to 5wf. $105 shipped in US. Paypal fine.

For sale Winston BIIMX 9′ 5wt.

Friday, June 18th, 2010
For sale Winston BIIMX 9′ 5wt. This is a brand new, never strung up, never had a reel on it, 9′ 5wt. Winston boron BIIMX. This is Winston’s top of the line, high performance rod which carries a retail price of $700. I think $590 would be a good deal for someone interested in picking up one of these fine rods (warranty card included). This rod was the grand prize at this years FFF conclave casting competition. I’m only selling it because, ironically, I’m more of a cane guy. Feel free to e-mail me with questions at oystersb@mindspring.com . I am able to accept credit cards if needed, and if you’re going to be at next weekends South Holston Fly Fishing Festival I can deliver in person.

Thanks for looking,
Bill O.

Hatches 2010 Teaser

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

It is now that time of year where I get excited as everything starts coming together and I must say that I am absolutely ecstatic with how Hatches 2010 is turning out. As always, Hatches would not be possible without the support of the FTF community. I personally thank each and every subscriber and I hope you all enjoy the 2010 issue as much as you have the past issues.

As some of you know as soon as the 2009 issue of Hatches arrived at my door I immediately began working on the 2010 issue. Countless people have asked me to publish more than one issue issue a year but it honestly takes me a full year to put an issue together from start to finish. Every word and photo is painstakingly scrutinized to ensure that every issue of Hatches exceeds the standard of quality that I have set for it and I want to feel confident that every loyal subscriber is not disappointed.

Below is the first sneak peek at an article from the 2010 issue. You can read a small excerpt from the article here: http://hatchesmagazine.com/blogs/Hatches/2…-muffin-cidada/
