Fly rod gift
My husband and I areĀ  avid anglers here in Arkansas, but really only familiar with spinning rods. We manly fish for largemouth bass, smllies, and pike. Anyway, we just bought a place on the White River and now we want to learn how to fly fish. Any suggestions for two people just starting out? I don’t want to invest a fortune in fly fishing equipment (it’s my husbands birthday) because we still want to fish the lakes a lot too.
Thanks, Ann

Smallmouth bass on the Fly

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Smallmouth bass on the Fly I was at a local lake for a guided Hybrid trip and when we got back to the dock I got my 2/3wt out of the truck and explored the back of a little cove just down form the ramp. I was expecting some bluegills and LM Bass. I ended up catching about a dozen Smallmouth bass. Nothing big but these things were frisky little guys. I dropped this one 2 times while trying to get a picture.
Many times while bringing in small sunfish came up from behind a dropoff and hammer the little guys. I didn’t have anything in my box that would get down to them. I think I had as much fun on my own as I did with the guide…lol

Fly rod lure for redfish

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

What do you think? The spoon fly is a great fly rod lure for redfish and I’ve heard Pike are pretty gullible for a spoon, so I thought I’d tie up some spoon flies for a friend in Canada that fishes for Pike. They are tied on a Mustad 34011 size #3/0. Not sure if it is to hot to fish for pike in shallow water; this is a shallow running spoon with not much weight is pretty weedless so I hope he gets a chance to use them. I think they should be large enough they have a pretty good presence and action in the water so I think they should still attract decent sized fish.

Trying to catch red fish

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010
Trying to catch red fish fly fishing and catch halibut. I was casting to a few Red Fish flipping bait in the shallows. These guys kept nailing the fly first every time. Frustrating.

Weekend of lake trout fishing

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Thought I’d post on this blog because from time to time I get to Arkansas to do a little trout fishing. I figured I’d share my last two weekends of lake trout fishing.

last Saturday I fished it for the first time two weekends ago and again had some great lake trout fishing as well as Pike. Pretty much stuck with two flies that I slow trolled off the edges of weed beds and reefs; deer hair gomphus bugs and bottom walkers. The lake trout were not big with the biggest being around 19″s. They do get a lot bigger in this lake.

They do give you a heck of a fight in the cold water and they love to do their alligator rolls.
Lot’s of wildlife abundant in the area with elk everywhere

Saw my first Marmot.

And got a chuckle from these little fox pups we stumbled upon.

All in all a great fly fishing trip and memories for a life time.
