Rod and reel ONLY for trout and catfish?

Friday, September 24th, 2010

I like to cook and bake rather then hunt, but here lately I have wanted to start to learn how to fish. As mentioned I am not into hunting unlike the rest of my family and why I want to ask a question here without having to go ask my family, because all I will get is a million opinions that will turn into some sort of argument.

Is it possible to buy a rod and reel ONLY for trout and catfish? Are these two species so different that you’d need to have a different fishing gear setup or is possible to merge the two?

My gear questions?

An affordable rod and reel for trout and catfish shore fishing a lake and the white river?
The basics for bait and or lures?
What time of day is best to fish?
How do I skin and gut the fish?

I appreciate your willingness and advice because I want to surprise them with the advice or education I learn by myself.
Regards,
Karen

Drift fishing on the White River

Saturday, September 11th, 2010
drift fishing
Is it possible to drift fish with a spinning reel on the White River? A few anglers I met were talking about drift fishing and I got the idea that it’s basically replicating fly fishing but with a spinning reel? They told me they were using glowballs or something, these cotton ball looking things. Does anyone know what they are, how they used, or rigged? Any weights? I’d be fishing for trout or even possibly catfish. They also used the phrase ‘bouncing roe’ (off the bottom) If you have experience drift fishing for blue cats then i’d sure like to hear about how to do that too.

The reel action on my fly rod

Friday, September 10th, 2010
I was given a fly rod which sat unused in my garage for many years . The reel just “free spins” and there doesn’t appear to be any drag action at all- Is it broken, or do I just need to adjust it somehow? I’d really like to use this tackle to fish with, but just don’t know if it is usable. Any help is greatly appreciated!
This reel has no markings, but is attached to a 8′ or 8.5′ 7 weight rod-

The correct fly line for my rod

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Good evening all – I just finished building my first fly rod (5wt) this holiday weekend and purchasedĀ  a reel off ebay. Now all I need to do is pick the correct fly-line. Any good, fairly decently priced fly line out there (internet) that you use or recommend? Now the real question is how often do I change the line? Is it necessary to use a backing? A leader? Thanks in advance and would appreciate any other relevant information about fly fishing line.

Thanks, Corey

The right waders for fly fishing?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Hey guys, thought this would be a great place to ask a question about the right waders for fly fishing? I am looking for a new pair of waders and need to decide between chest/waist waders. I’ve use chest waders in the past and felt a bit limited on flexibility and that I get too hot. The only downside is I have at times, needed full chest protection.

Do any of you have this same problem and what was your remedy?

Thoughts?

Andy

Fly Fishing From shore in a lake for trout?

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010
Hey everyone,
I’ve been enjoying the summers in Arkansas great outdoors and thought I’d post a question for my fellow razorbacks. I will be staying at a cabin on BeaverlakeĀ  for a couple of weeks in September and have not fished it before so I could use some advise. I’ll be using a 5w fly rod with floating line but need a bit of guidance for the best way to catch a lake trout. I have chest waders so I can wade, but what would be extremely helpful is to know what type of structures to keep an eye out for? Also, what flies I should be using in September to try and catch some of the trout. I will also be fishing below the dam if that helps with ancillary advice or flies.

Crappie and bluegill fly line

Monday, August 23rd, 2010
Fly line crappieLooking for tips and techniques (proven;-) for a good crappie and bluegill fly line. My idea is to use a floating and slow to sink fly line that could be used for crappie and bluegill. I have currently on order 5 wt. rod, with a X4 leader. I just need a 5 wt. floating and a 5 wt. slow sinking line that can be used for small crappie and bluegill. I purposely used crappie and bluegill a bunch of time for a reason in this post. Thanks, Colin
