Hello I am angler in Mountain Home Arkansas and I am mainly a bait fisherman and had a co-worker show me how to fly fish on our breaks to try and catch a bigger fish. I got hooked and wanted to learn more about fly fishing and been reading up on casting techniques, but should have read about is all the different wet and dry flies themselves. Unfortunately, my co-worker moved to another store so it’s not possible to pick his brain. Anyway, I am a bit lost and my interest in it diminished for a time. Now recently I was looking through a estate sale garage/sale and I saw one of his old rod and reel that was for a ridiculously cheap price. So I am wanting to continue where I left off and I want to try some fly fishing next time I go down by the stream or lake. Now the problem is I have no Flies and wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what kind of flies I should use up here in North Arkansas, say on a pond for bass and crappie to learn on? Also I realize the type of fly depends on whats native here but im more hoping someone can help me rule out some types that would never be used here in the North. Thanks!
Mike
P.S. Thank You for the invite.

I’ll jump right in. I’ve got down how to cast well and I practiced on fish-less streams and ponds. I want to try going for crappie in my local pond. There a re a lot of crappie and I have caught them with lures and worms many times. What insect or fly should i use is my only question and any tips for casting. If you could be descriptive this would sure help.

I have started to fish the White River in a great hard to find location, there is a heavy canopy over the river with a nice stream feeding into it and the sides and covered with reeds and bushes. This prevents me from side-arm casting from the side of the stream or casting from in the water. Should I just let a fly float down the river downstream of where Im standing? If so, should a float and dry fly or a wet fly?
Thanks, -Bill

Bass fishing on a fly rod? I understand a 6 wt. line would be best, but the type/brand best suited for smallmouth bass and bream fishing? I am also looking for some solid advice on how to rig up a fly rod. Finally, should I fish near the top of the water or go deeper? Because when you think of fly fishing, I always assume that keeping the lure or fly on the top. Also, a bit confusing for me to understand the difference between dry flies and wet, but then again I am a new fly fisherman.
Thanks for your help Arky Angler.

The standard I know is to use a fly & bobber. If one of you fly fisherman can tip off a newbie on the difference between dry and wet flies? Also, what should I be using here in Arkansas during the summer?…….any suggestions on what type or color?

Afternoon all! Fly fisherman in West Virginia checking in. I started fly fishing two years ago and caught on pretty quick because it’s one of a few things that slows me down in life that I truly enjoy. I am always open for suggestions and do pretty good, but I do have a few questions if some of you could find the time to answer? Alright here goes, I live in the NW of Va and need suggestions on flies, nymphs, stone flies, ect, I mainly fly fish in the summer so is there a certain bait I should use? I also head over to the Potomac River and fish its rocky, but has a lot of sun fish and bass. Any suggestions on a fly to catch these fish?
Thanks for the invitation- Rocky

First, I want to say thank you for the invitation to this blog. Alright, my question is for the last 20 years I have been a longtime largemouth bass angler. Now, I want to start fresh and new fly fishing for trout. My casting is okay at best, but it seems that is one thing that will always need improvement. Also, looking for advice, tips, or books/vids, what flies to use when, ect. I live in in NW Arkansas and have close access to great fishing on the White River. So any tips for a fly fishing beginner would be a plus, and let me know if you want to go fishing!
