Bass fishing on a fly rod?

Bass fishing with Fly rod
Bass fishing on a fly rod? I understand a 6 wt. line would be best, but the type/brand best suited for smallmouth bass and bream fishing? I am also looking for some solid advice on how to rig up a fly rod. Finally, should I fish near the top of the water or go deeper? Because when you think of fly fishing, I always assume that keeping the lure or fly on the top. Also, a bit confusing for me to understand the difference between dry flies and wet, but then again I am a new fly fisherman. ;-)
Thanks for your help Arky Angler.

wet flies and dry

Wet flies and dry flies? Another Newbie here to ask a question abut fly fishing. I am going to give fly fishing a go and try my luck at some trout fishing this summer. The standard I know is to use a fly & bobber. If one of you fly fisherman can tip off a newbie on the difference between dry and wet flies? Also, what should I be using here in Arkansas during the summer?…….any suggestions on what type or color?

What size do you recommend?

West Virgina fly fishingAfternoon all! Fly fisherman in West Virginia checking in. I started fly fishing two years ago and caught on pretty quick because it’s one of a few things that slows me down in life that I truly enjoy. I am always open for suggestions and do pretty good, but I do have a few questions if some of you could find the time to answer? Alright here goes, I live in the NW of Va and need suggestions on flies, nymphs, stone flies, ect, I mainly fly fish in the summer so is there a  certain bait I should use? I also head over to the Potomac River and fish its rocky, but has a lot of sun fish and bass. Any suggestions on a fly to catch these fish?
Thanks for the invitation- Rocky

Ready to start fly fishing for trout

fly fishing
First, I want to say thank you for the invitation to this blog. Alright, my question is for the last 20 years I have been a longtime largemouth bass angler. Now, I want to start fresh and new fly fishing for trout. My casting is okay at best, but it seems that is one thing that will always need improvement. Also, looking for advice, tips, or books/vids, what flies to use when, ect. I live in in NW Arkansas and have close access to great fishing on the White River. So any tips for a fly fishing beginner would be a plus, and let me know if you want to go fishing!

Fly rod gift
My husband and I are  avid anglers here in Arkansas, but really only familiar with spinning rods. We manly fish for largemouth bass, smllies, and pike. Anyway, we just bought a place on the White River and now we want to learn how to fly fish. Any suggestions for two people just starting out? I don’t want to invest a fortune in fly fishing equipment (it’s my husbands birthday) because we still want to fish the lakes a lot too.
Thanks, Ann

Smallmouth bass on the Fly

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Smallmouth bass on the Fly I was at a local lake for a guided Hybrid trip and when we got back to the dock I got my 2/3wt out of the truck and explored the back of a little cove just down form the ramp. I was expecting some bluegills and LM Bass. I ended up catching about a dozen Smallmouth bass. Nothing big but these things were frisky little guys. I dropped this one 2 times while trying to get a picture.
Many times while bringing in small sunfish came up from behind a dropoff and hammer the little guys. I didn’t have anything in my box that would get down to them. I think I had as much fun on my own as I did with the guide…lol

Fly rod lure for redfish

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

What do you think? The spoon fly is a great fly rod lure for redfish and I’ve heard Pike are pretty gullible for a spoon, so I thought I’d tie up some spoon flies for a friend in Canada that fishes for Pike. They are tied on a Mustad 34011 size #3/0. Not sure if it is to hot to fish for pike in shallow water; this is a shallow running spoon with not much weight is pretty weedless so I hope he gets a chance to use them. I think they should be large enough they have a pretty good presence and action in the water so I think they should still attract decent sized fish.
