Flies for Fly Fishing advice
Wednesday, September 8th, 2010Hello I am angler in Mountain Home Arkansas and I am mainly a bait fisherman and had a co-worker show me how to fly fish on our breaks to try and catch a bigger fish. I got hooked and wanted to learn more about fly fishing and been reading up on casting techniques, but should have read about is all the different wet and dry flies themselves. Unfortunately, my co-worker moved to another store so it’s not possible to pick his brain. Anyway, I am a bit lost and my interest in it diminished for a time. Now recently I was looking through a estate sale garage/sale and I saw one of his old rod and reel that was for a ridiculously cheap price. So I am wanting to continue where I left off and I want to try some fly fishing next time I go down by the stream or lake. Now the problem is I have no Flies and wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction as to what kind of flies I should use up here in North Arkansas, say on a pond for bass and crappie to learn on? Also I realize the type of fly depends on whats native here but im more hoping someone can help me rule out some types that would never be used here in the North. Thanks!
Mike
P.S. Thank You for the invite.
Fly Fishing From shore in a lake for trout?
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010Hey everyone,
I’ve been enjoying the summers in Arkansas great outdoors and thought I’d post a question for my fellow razorbacks. I will be staying at a cabin on Beaverlake for a couple of weeks in September and have not fished it before so I could use some advise. I’ll be using a 5w fly rod with floating line but need a bit of guidance for the best way to catch a lake trout. I have chest waders so I can wade, but what would be extremely helpful is to know what type of structures to keep an eye out for? Also, what flies I should be using in September to try and catch some of the trout. I will also be fishing below the dam if that helps with ancillary advice or flies.
Wet flies and dry flies?
Wednesday, August 11th, 2010
Wet flies and dry flies? Another Newbie here to ask a question abut fly fishing. I am going to give fly fishing a go and try my luck at some trout fishing this summer. The standard I know is to use a fly & bobber. If one of you fly fisherman can tip off a newbie on the difference between dry and wet flies? Also, what should I be using here in Arkansas during the summer?…….any suggestions on what type or color?
What size do you recommend?
