The Pike just won’t bite

Saturday, May 8th, 2010
Hello everyone, I am upset because for a over a week I’ve been targeting pike in a small 2.5 acre pond/lake that is absolutely “infested”(this seems to be the right term) with pike. There can be several pike in all different sizes seen during every outing. In 8 days of trying all sizes, types, colors, shapes of flies and trying different types of retrieve there was not a single hook-up.
Be it top water presentation, deep sinking line use or an intermediate going through different depths, nothing.
I tried, early mornings, during the day, late evenings. Picked sunny days, overcast days even fished through a storm. It just happened that even the water clarity has changed for some reason. First few days of fishing the water had some green and yellow “cloudy” stuff in it reducing the visibility to about 2-3 ft at the most. Last few days, after several rain storms, the water has cleared up significantly to a point where I can see several feet through very clear water. (Now I can see how and where I lost my flies :-)

All I got was rather two large pike following my fly all the way to the shore (about 3-6 ft from the shore), that was on two different occasions. First in the middle of a sunny day and the second right before the above mentioned storm.  Oh, and I did get one violent bite which, for some reason, did not result in a hook-up, might have been my “overdone” weed guard. Now, I am even considering to try soaking my flies in some type of fishing lure for the lack of other ideas. That’s how bad this is bugging me.

Given I am a newbie to chasing pike I ask for your opinions.

The pike in that lake are actively feeding as I can see numerous bait fish “explosions” quite often, but evenings seem to be the most active time. A couple of times, being in the right place, at the right time, I somehow managed to pick-up my line pretty fast and hit the “bait boiling” water right on and ………….. NOTHING.

I can’t wait to hear from all the experience pike pro’s here.

Thanks in advance

Great Northern Pike and the Bluefish

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Anglers arguing over the “Best Type” of fishing. Specifically for two of my favorite species the Great Northern Pike and the Bluefish.

Bluefish fight like fiends – and I have to say that pound for pound they truly are the fightingest fish. Also keep in mind pound for pound could be as high as 20…the far more common 5-10 range is perfect for fly gear.

Just because a fly can be ratty, doesn’t mean these fish are easy to catch. Pike fishing can be demanding – requiring highly accurate casts with beefy flies. Blues can be aggressive but they can also spook, often a long cast is most effective at the same time snotty weather, heavy currents, and high winds are their preferred conditions.

In some ways these fish are very similar in that they can destroy flies. I don’t really consider that a big problem since A. I tie flies and the hook is the most expensive part materials for a fly are rarely more that a buck B. Neither of these fish are all that picky, Bluefish especially will hit just about anything and its a great way to use the flies with twisted hackles or squashed heads.

Just venting

My new Sur 1508f fishing rod

Thursday, May 6th, 2010
This is a very nice blank that surprised me with its casting abilities and here is my SUR 1508F that I built using lowriders for long distance chunking for a friend in Maryland.

Hold down the fort boys

Saturday, March 27th, 2010
Merc, Chip, Troutbuzzed, 16Adams, and a few other guys are taking over Pyramid lake starting tomorrow. Hopefully we will have lots of pictures and stories to share with you all next week. It is not the Juan, but a different animal altogether. Don’t get too wild while we are gone or we will have to put you on double secret probation ;)

See ya!

Toccoa DH 3/25/2010

Saturday, March 27th, 2010
Fishing Report: Toccoa River D/H
Date 3/25/2010
Time of arrival 9:00AM Departure 4:00 PM
Partners: Dennis (fish vacuum) John S, Sid, Dick, myself Robert
Condition
Stream Flow still cranking about 550 CFM (should be at 400)
Air Temp 58-61 (but seemed cooler with the wind)
Mostly Cloudy over cast and till the end of the day then got some rain
Wind 5-10 SE/SSE
Water temp: 50 / Clarity: Clear/Cloudy
Fishing: We all caught fish, Dennis (again) caught the most, I think he said somewhere around 25.
But, the best report was from John that caught a Bass, he said about 2-3 lbs
Sid did well, till the end when he lost his rig in the stream.
I got videos of Dick catching a nice trout off a dry fly.
And I think my total was 8
Flies: Zonker , Rubber leg flies dark color, Prince Nymph, Parachute Adams (grey body)
And do not forget split shot BBs, lots of them!

In conclusion
I am telling you that from a previous dunk in the cold months, I have a lot of respect for this large body of water! It took me a little time to get the courage up, so what I did was go down stream to the Pine Island near the Shallowford bridge and then work on some more challenging parts. If you going in the next couple of days, watch yourself.
But the fishing was great because no one has had the courage to fish in it this year. The trout were very healthy,, beautiful vivid colors.
Mine were all in the 10″ to 15″ inch range

It was nice to fish back in Georgia, we do have some beautiful streams!

Cow Town Creek Video

Saturday, March 27th, 2010
I have come across a decent little stream in north Georgia where cows and fish seem to live together in harmony. Taking a page out of Dawgbit’s a/k/a GAtorbyte FIOF ventures, we spent the better part of the day on Friday fishin’ with the cows. Needeless to say it was a pretty good day. Just watch and see.

Resources

Saturday, March 27th, 2010
I “inherited” a bunch of flies when a gentlemen in my cousins fly fishing club (in Orlando) passed on.

They are all ones that he tied to go on trips hither and yon. Being a little new at this, I have have not even begun to be able to identify all of the thousands of patterns that are out there.

Is there an online resource for such identification so that I can get a handle on what I have?
