Fly fisherman West Virginia checking in
Afternoon all! Fly fisherman in West Virginia checking in. I started fly fishing two years ago and caught on pretty quick because it’s one of a few things that slows me down in life that I truly enjoy. I am always open for suggestions and do pretty good, but I do have a few questions if some of you could find the time to answer? Alright here goes, I live in the NW of Va and need suggestions on flies, nymphs, stone flies, ect, I mainly fly fish in the summer so is there a certain bait I should use? I also head over to the Potomac River and fish its rocky, but has a lot of sun fish and bass. Any suggestions on a fly to catch these fish? Thanks for the invitation- Rocky

I don’t know if you tie your own flies, but what i was always told was to match the hatch. Also, I hope this doesn’t seem arrogant, but fly fishing is not a science it is an art. It is all about having the right pattern, right size and getting the perfect drift. I cant tell you what pattern to fish because that all depends on that specific day you are fishing. Patterns can change by the hour. However there are many dry and wet flies that are a staple in every box. You can either buy them in kits or individually, usually starter assortments will work such as:
The most beneficial thing to do is to talk to people that you see fishing. They will most often be more than willing to help you out, and probably even give you a fly or two.
Good luck and tight lines!
